Main Water Line Replacement in Lehi, Utah

At Valley Plumbing, we pride ourselves on delivering high-quality, reliable, and efficient plumbing services to homeowners across Utah. In this recent project, we successfully completed a challenging main water line replacement for a client in Lehi, Utah. This project involved replacing the main water line running from the water meter to the property and required careful excavation, advanced trenchless technology, and precision installation of key components such as the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) and shut-off valves.

This case study demonstrates how Valley Plumbing’s expertise, dedication, and use of modern plumbing technology ensured a smooth and successful project, with minimal disruption to the homeowner’s property. Our goal was to restore full water flow to the home and provide a reliable, long-term solution.

The Problem: Damaged Main Water Line

The client had been experiencing issues with their water line, including reduced water pressure and occasional leaks. After inspecting the property, the Valley Plumbing team determined that the main water line running from the meter to the house was deteriorating due to age and environmental factors. Over time, underground water lines can suffer from corrosion, root intrusion, or ground shifting, all of which compromise efficiency and lead to leaks or inconsistent water flow.

The existing water line was buried approximately 3-4 feet deep, running a length of 55 feet from the water meter to the corner of the property. Given the depth and obstacles such as a driveway and nearby utilities, a traditional trench-digging approach would have been labor-intensive and highly disruptive to the landscape. The client needed an efficient solution that would minimize the impact on the property while addressing the water line problem.

Step 2: Pneumatic Missile and Water Line Installation

Using a pneumatic missile, Valley Plumbing shot a new ¾-inch poly water line through the existing path of the old water line. This technology allowed the team to replace the line without digging a full trench along the entire property, which would have been time-consuming and disruptive.

The initial attempts to shoot the missile encountered challenges due to wet ground conditions, causing the missile to veer off course. However, after multiple attempts, the team successfully navigated the missile through the correct path, pulling the new poly water line through from the driveway hole to the foundation of the home. The second missile shot from the meter hole to the driveway was successful on the first attempt.

Once the new poly water line was in place, the team connected the line to the water meter and made the necessary internal connections to the house.

Step 3: Installation of PRV and Shut-Off Valves

With the new water line installed, Valley Plumbing proceeded to install a new Pressure-Reducing Valve (PRV), a new ball valve outside, and a new stop-and-waste valve to modernize the system. The PRV is an essential component that regulates the water pressure entering the home, preventing damage to plumbing fixtures. The new shut-off valves provide the client with better control over water flow and make future maintenance easier.

Step 4: Testing and Backfilling

After making all the necessary connections, the team conducted a comprehensive water pressure test to ensure there were no leaks in the new water line. The water pressure was set at 65 psi, as requested by the client. Once testing confirmed successful installation, the team backfilled the excavation sites, compacted the soil to prevent future settling, and restored the landscaping to the best of their ability.

Although final landscaping was left to the client, Valley Plumbing ensured that the property was left clean and presentable with minimal visible impact.

The Results: A Durable and Efficient Water Line Replacement

The client’s water line issues were completely resolved with this trenchless replacement. The new poly water line now provides consistent water pressure and reliability for years to come, thanks to the advanced materials and professional installation techniques used by Valley Plumbing.

Long-Term Benefits:

  • Durability: The new ¾-inch poly water line is resistant to corrosion, ensuring that the client will not experience leaks or water pressure issues in the foreseeable future.
  • Minimal Disruption: The trenchless technology minimized the impact on the landscape, driveway, and property aesthetics. This approach also reduced the time needed to complete the project, allowing the team to finish within one day.
  • Pressure Regulation: The new PRV ensures that the water pressure entering the home remains at a safe and consistent level, prolonging the lifespan of the plumbing system and reducing the risk of fixture damage.
